Spotify is the latest music streaming platform to share its 100 million user feat this month. And unlike Gaana in India, which also announced it has 100 million users, Spotify reached the landmark globally with the help of users who are paying for its services.

This was mentioned in the latest company figures, which also highlighted that after becoming the quickest to get one million users on board in India, Spotify has managed to notch up another million in the past couple of months.

This puts Spotify’s user count in India since its launch in February at 2 million. However, it’s worth mentioning that Spotify hasn’t revealed how many of its users in India have paid for its streaming service.

The platform has faced quite a battle to launch in India, and continues to tussle with multiple music houses over content disputes, forcing Spotify to take them off the app, which is available on Android, iOS and even Windows.

In total, Spotify’s global user base increased 26 percent year-on-year to reach 217 million, which includes both paid and free registered users.

The free tier version, launched for the first time in markets like India has helped Spotify increase its content usage in hours, by 12 percent.

The company pointed out that Europe contributed 40 percent of the total paid subscribers, followed by North America with 30 percent. It expects to have about 107 million to 110 million premium subscribers by the end of the current quarter.

Spotify’s anticipated launch in India has been a mixed bag for the company. While users have been added and it is still early to expect majority of them to pay for its music, Spotify needs to fix the content issue before users head to other platforms.
