Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is facing the wrath of social media for his decision to activate the site’s option of Safety Check for Paris attacks and not for the deadly bombing at Beirut which killed more than 40.

The Beirut bombing took place on Thursday, just a day prior to the Paris attack, but Facebook’s decision to activate Safety Check for the latter has received much criticism from social media users. In a facebook post Zuckerberg explained,

Many people have rightfully asked why we turned on Safety Check for Paris but not for bombings in Beirut and other places. Until yesterday, our policy was only to activate Safety Check for natural disasters. We just changed this and now plan to activate Safety Check for more human disasters going forward as well.

Along with Safety Check activation, Zuckerberg has also changed his display picture. It now is overlaid with colours of France’s flag. The social media site has made the same available to others as well, in solidarity with the Paris attack.
