Google on Monday introduced a new feature in its Maps where commuters in Delhi will be able to see auto rickshaws under the "public transport" mode in Maps.

By selecting the mode, commuters will be able to view suggested routes for the ride as well as the estimated auto-rickshaw fares, making it easier for them to plan their trips, Google said in a statement.

The new feature can be found within the "public transport" and "cab" modes in Google Maps and is based on the expected trip route and the official fare model shared by the Delhi Traffic Police. The feature is currently available to users in Delhi, with more cities likely to be added in the coming months.

To use the feature, update Google Maps to the latest version.

How to Get an Auto from Google Maps

  • Open Google Maps
  • Select your destination
  • Tap on Directions and head over to Public transport tab
  • Find auto and its meter-specific pricing

Commuters will be able to see the autorickshaw result in the "Also Consider" section.

Autos are now showing up on Google Maps.

After choosing the mode of transport (auto-rickshaw icon) on the screen, you can see the estimated price of the journey and the route's traffic information. Then tap ‘Navigate' to start the trip. The same option can also be accessed via the "cab" mode on Google Maps, said the company.

It’s worth noting that autorickshaw drivers seldom go by the meter charges in the city, even though that is not supposed to be the case.

So, it’ll be better for the user to go prepared to pay something different that what gets quoted on the Maps.
