Airbags save a lot of lives when people are involved in a car crash. In India, most of the new generation vehicles are fitted with dual airbags or curtain airbags.

But Ford has taken safety a step further. In most head-on collisions, the driver’s or the co-passengers’ vital organs are protected by an airbag deployment, but many are left with broken lower limbs – unless the car is fitted with a knee airbag.

Ford has ditched the traditional method of integrating the knee airbag in the instrument panel. Now they have integrated it into the glovebox lid.

Ford says that this helps in increasing knee room for the passenger and still provides safety.

Ford has used a moulded plastic design which sits between the inner and outer layers of the glovebox for the knee airbag.

The company has been granted 23 patents for this airbag.

Ford’s new Mustang, which comes with eight airbags, is one of the safest vehicles in its category according to an accreditation given by the North American governing body.

But Ford has no immediate plans to bring this iconic car to India.
