Twitterati across the country were sent into a frenzy after news emerged that Rahul Gandhi’s account was hacked on Wednesday. Trolls worked overtime to mock the Gandhi scion for the tweets from the account of the Office of Rahul Gandhi.

On Thursday, the integrity of the handle was restored, but not before much face was lost. However, what followed was even more bizarre. News trickled in that Twitter handles of the Indian National Congress and one of its social media managers, Rachit Seth, had also been compromised.

Alas, all of this could have been avoided if the social media team handling the accounts had used the simple two factor verification process that Twitter provides its users with.

Twitter’s two-factor authentication does what it says, and makes the login verification of a user’s account a two-step process. The small step enhances the security of the user’s account greatly by asking them to enter a password, and then a six-digit login code for accessing Twitter.

With the two-step authentication enabled, you'll spend a few extra seconds logging into your account, but having a secure account is worth the trouble.

We at The Quint are here to help you add that extra layer of security to your Twitter account so that you can sleep peacefully tonight.

However, there’s more that can be done to secure your Twitter account further. Here’s How to keep your Twitter account safe.

Use password generator for strong passwords

Enable two-factor authentication

Only log in through trusted devices

Log out of Twitter after each session
