The name comes after Google opened its doors to taking suggestions from users last month.

The wait is over with a sweet release, as Android N finally has a name! The new version is not called Nutella, much to everyone’s surprise but Nougat.

The news comes after last month’s I/O (annual conference where huge announcements are usually made) where Google allowed users to submit their suggestions online for the new name.

For those wondering what nougat is, it is a confection made from sugar or honey, whipped egg whites and roasted nuts. It’s the chewy stuff, used in chocolates like Snickers.

Apart from Nutella, the other contenders were nutmeg, nectarine and India’s very own neyyappam — an Indian treat from Kerala that many fought hard to get into the suggestions.

Nachos and noodles also figured in on the list but it was obvious they would not be taken, given that Google sticks to dessert names, like bees to honey.

Android N is currently on its second developer preview and will be out for a stable release in summer.
