Two months after the fashion e-tailer Myntra switched to an app-only format, parent company and India’s largest online retailer Flipkart too has decided to shut down its website from September.
The company’s chief product officer Punit Soni informed employees at a town hall meeting last week that Flipkart will operate with only a mobile app from September, said sources.
Flipkart’s app will allow e-tailers to create personalised shopping experiences through user’s location, preferences and purchase patterns, a feature not attainable on website. The move to go app-only resulted from the growing popularity of smartphones in India as more and more people were shopping through smartphones.
Myntra has reportedly seen a 10% decline in sales post going app-only. Myntra said that before closing the website, 90% of traffic and 70% of sales came from the mobile platform. But Flipkart’s decision to go the same way indicates that the two companies are evidently sure, that it’s better to focus fully on mobile apps, which they believe is the future of this industry.
Flipkart currently has 45 million registered users and gets over 10 million daily visits to its website.
