India is all set to get its first bullet train, which will run between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. It will cover a distance of 508 kms in just about 2 hours and 7 minutes at its fastest, and is capable of reaching a top speed of 350 kmph.

It will be built at a cost of Rs 1.1 lakh crore and is set to become operational by 15 August 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are laying the foundation stone for this project. Japan will also extend a loan of up to 80% of the project value, repayable in 50 years.

Most of the track will be elevated and the bullet train will also have a 21 km tunnel to pass through, 7km of which will be under the sea. By 2053, 105 bullet trains will do up to 70 trips a day between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, bringing these cities closer together. Ticket prices will likely be lower than air fare for the route, according to the government.
