OnePlus 5 users got a surprising Christmas present from the company’s co-founder, who confirmed that due to popular demand, Face Unlock feature will be coming to their device.

The same was shared by Carl Pei via Twitter, who admitted that rolling out the feature to OnePlus 5 users through its beta version of Android 8.0 Oreo did prove to be a big success, and many people shared this feedback with the company.

Many users, who’ve got access to beta version of Oreo-based Oxygen OS, have shared screenshots of the Face Unlock feature, showing up on the settings page, earlier in 2017. And it’s good to see that before the year ends, many disgruntled OnePlus 5 users have something to cheer about.

The Unlock feature works as advertised, and manages to function even when the light conditions are not favourable for the camera to detect his/her face.

Both OnePlus 5T and 5 run on the same hardware, which makes it possible to integrate the software-centric Face Unlock feature to the latter.

The feature, as admitted by OnePlus themselves, isn’t as secure as the fingerprint scanner at the back, which is why you can’t rely on it to pay for online shopping, something which can be done with Face ID on the iPhone X.

OnePlus 5 carries a different form size and screen compared to the OnePlus 5T, which was introduced to stay relevant with other brands, by offering 18:9 display ratio. The phone comes with Snapdragon 835 processor, 6/8GB RAM with 64 and 128GB storage options respectively.

The big difference comes in the camera department, as OnePlus opted to use better low-light optics, compared to telephoto lens on the OnePlus 5.

Luckily, these increments did not spruce up the price of the 5T, selling at Rs 32,999 and Rs 37,999. Buyers in India also got the chance to go for the Star Wars edition of OnePlus 5T which is priced at Rs 38,999.
