Jeep will start deliveries of the Compass diesel immediately, while deliveries of the petrol Compass will begin around Diwali. Jeep India says it has already got 5,000 plus bookings for the Compass, and close to 38,000 enquiries for it. The company only has 50 odd dealers in India, so deliveries will be a bit strained.

The Compass is being made at Jeep's plant at Ranjangaon in Pune. All the right-hand drive markets in the world will get the Jeep Compass, which is made in India.

The Jeep Compass is quite capable in varied terrain with its Selec-Terrain all-wheel drive system.

Jeep is offering a three year warranty with the Compass, valid for 1,00,000 km. The service interval for the Compass is once a year or once every 15,000 km, which should keep maintenance costs quite low.

There are two engine choices with the Compass. The first is a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that puts out 162 bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque.

This comes with a 6-speed manual in the base model, and 7-speed automatics in the other two variants. The diesel is a 2-litre engine that puts out 171 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque with a six-speed manual. The Limited variant comes with 4x4 in two options.

The Jeep Compass will compete with the Mahindra XUV500, Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster.

Overall, with the pricing strategy that Jeep India has adopted, it competes directly with the Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV500 and Renault Duster. Watch out for a detailed comparison of these vehicles with the Compass on The Quint.
