Telecom operators Airtel and Vodafone Idea have been taking potshots at Reliance Jio on social media, over its latest announcement of charging its subscribers 6 paise per minute for voice calls.

Earlier this week, Reliance Jio had announced it would drop the free voice call facility for calls made to numbers associated with other telecom operators.

This essentially means that while the Jio-to-Jio calls remain free, calls on other networks such as Airtel and Vodafone Idea will now be charged 6 paise per minute – as per TRAI’s IUC norms.

When We Say Unlimited Calling We Mean Just That, Says Airtel

Airtel tweeted out a short clip saying “free is not equal to 6 paise per minute”.

Taking a jibe at Reliance, the clip urges the public to switch to Airtel.

‘Truly Freely Calls on Vodafone Idea’

Telecom Operator Vodafone was also not far behind. In a tweet, the telecom operator assured its subscribers that ‘there will be no charges on Vodafone calls to other networks.’

Reliance Jio Gives It Back

As expected, Reliance Jio fired shots at both the operators with a series of tweets.

The telecom operator explained that, “every time a Jio customer makes an outgoing mobile call to other operator’s customer, 6 paise/minute is paid to the other operator as Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC), as per Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Regulations.”
