Match 44: India vs Sri Lanka

It’s the last group stage match of this 2019 ICC World Cup for both Sri Lanka and India at Headingley today.

While the Lankans are already out of the tournament, India have a lot riding on the result of this match as it will decide where they finish in the points table. Currently second behind Australia, if India win this game, they could finish at 15 points.

However, there is the matter of the game between Australia and South Africa. If Australia win, they take the outright lead in the standings and finish with 16 points. If they lose and India win, then it’s Virat Kohli’s team that finish on top.

Why does it matter who finishes on top?

Because the semi-final line-up is the first placed team against the fourth and the second-placed team against the third. So the top team plays New Zealand on Tuesday and the second-placed team plays England on Thursday.

India vs Sri Lanka World Cup 2019: 'I Will Bat at 7'

On the eve of the match against Sri Lanka, Dinesh Karthik came for the pre-match press conference and talked about his place in the batting order.

Karthik replaced Kedar Jadhav in the game against Bangladesh, his World Cup debut, having first got the taste of international cricket back in 2004.

“I think they’ve been very clear on what my role has been. When I go in at No 7, I need to pace myself accordingly if we bat second. If we are batting first, then make sure we get to the par score that’s required. They’ve made it clear that this is where I’ll be batting, and my role is to make sure, whatever the situation is, assess it and do the best that I can.”

India vs Sri Lanka World Cup 2019: Sri Lanka to Bat

Sri Lankan skipper Karunaratne has won the toss and elected to bat first against India. Virat Kohli says he too would've chosen to bat first.

2 changes in the Indian XI - Yuzvendra Chahal is rested for left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav, and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja makes his first appearance in this World Cup for fast bowler Mohammed Shami.

Sri Lanka made one change after beating the West Indies by 23 runs on Monday in Chester-le-Street. Veteran allrounder Thisara Perera is in for Jeffrey Vandersay.

Conditions are dry but cloudy overhead.

“We will bat first. It was an obvious plan, it’s a used wicket and will get slower and slower. We didn’t capitalize in the first few games, but we then started to correct those mistakes and started to do well. One change, Thisara Perera replaces Vandersay.”

A Look at the Records:

KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma became the first opening pair to post partnerships of 150 runs or more in consecutive World Cup matches. They followed up their 180-run stand against Bangladesh with a 189-run partnership against Sri Lanka.

Rahul and Rohit's partnership against Sri Lanka on Saturday would become India's highest opening stand in World Cup matches.

Another Player of the Match Award for Rohit Sharma

“Not thinking about all these kind of milestones. I know if I play well all these things will happen along the way. My job is to keep my head straight and get my team to the finishing line. The shot selection becomes important once you are in. I have to keep telling myself on what sort of shots I can play on that pitch and what sort of bowlers are bowling to me. I try and calculate how I want to go forward based on that. It has paid dividends so far. There has to be some discipline as well in your batting and I have learned that from my past,” said Rohit Sharma after the match.

Malinga is Definitely a Match-Winner: Rohit

“ Malinga has been a champion bowler for Sri Lanka and then for Mumbai Indians. I have had a great time playing with him. He is definitely a match-winner. He has shown it over the years how the teams rely on him. I have seen him in close quarters and the cricket world will miss him. As a team we are not thinking about that (Aus-SA game). We have had a great victory today and we want to celebrate that rather than thinking about what is going on there. Whatever opposition comes our way we will put up a show.”

Really Proud and Happy of Our Team: Virat Kohli

“We wanted to play good cricket. To be honest, we didn't expect this kind of scoreline heading into the semis. But that's what consistent performances and hard work get you. Really proud and happy of our team. Most amazing team to be a part of. It is a really honour to play for India. More or less everything is set. But we don't want to be one dimensional, I think the team that is more flexible on the day has more chances of executing what they want to.”

Ian Gould's Last Match as an Umpire

Englishman Ian Gould brought down curtains on his umpiring career after officiating for the last time during India's clash with Sri Lanka at the ongoing World Cup at Headingley.

Gould finished his career having umpired in 74 Tests, while the India vs Sri Lanka match here is his 140th ODI.

Virat Kohli on Semi-Final Opponent

“The opposition has never mattered. We don't focus on what the opposition brings to the table. If we don't play well anyone can beat us and if we play well we can beat anyone. The focus has to be within and we are confident of our skill sets. We just want to go out there in the semifinal and express our skills and strengths as a team. So regardless of who we will play, we want to play good cricket and get the result our way.”
