Gayle Overtakes De Villiers’s Tally of Most Sixes in World Cup

Enroute to his match-winning 50 against Pakistan in Nottingham, Chris Gayle outscored AB de Villiers (37 sixes) hitting the most sixes in World Cup history.

Friday’s knock saw Gayle hit three sixes during his knock thereby taking his tally to 40 in World Cups, which is the most ever by any batsmen.

Gayle hit Hasan Ali for two back to back sixes in just the fourth over of the match. The first one was the 38th of his career and the next was his 39th.

He hit his third six inn the 10th over of the innings to Wahab Riaz taking his total World Cup six count to 40. He was dismissed on 50 with the team score reading 77/3 in the 11th over.

Before the match Gayle and De Villiers were tied on 37 sixes each. De Villiers, however, had batted lesser innings (22) than Gayle (26).

Earlier in the game, the Windies bowlers limited Pakistan to a paltry 105 after they won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Young pacer Oshane Thomas picked up four wickets, while skipper Jason Holder took three. Taking advantage of the pace and bounce, all-rounder Andre Russell also chipped in with two wickets.
