#DhoniKeepTheGlove became the top trend on Indian Twitter on Friday, 7 June, as many users were angered by the ICC’s request to BCCI, asking Dhoni to remove army insignia from his keeping gloves.

The hashtag also started trending globally later in the day. It became third top trend on Twitter worldwide.

The hashtag was the top trend on Indian Twitter.

In the match against South Africa, the veteran wicket-keeper and former skipper, MS Dhoni sported a dagger called ‘Balidaan’ (sacrifice) on his gloves.

Balidaan is a distinct insignia of the special forces, which forms part of the Parachute Regiment. Only Paramilitary Commandos are allowed to wear the Balidaan Badge.

Dhoni, who has been conferred an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment in 2011, had also undergone training under the Para Brigade in 2015. The move won him a lot of love on social media and also an equal amount of support when the news of ICC asking ‘Balidaan’ to be removed, broke.

Here is what Twitter had to say.

Some users also asked ICC to first fix other fault lines in the game like faulty umpiring, before asking Dhoni to remove the insignia.

‘Mark of Respect’

Some users also backed the ICC’s request for the insignia to be removed saying that rules should be followed and also citing that it takes much more than being an honorary member to support the symbol.
