Set to chase 353 against India to win their third game of the 2019 World Cup, Australian opener David Warner got an early life as the bails didn’t dislodge from the groove despite the ball visibly hitting the stumps.
Very dramatically, the very first delivery of Bumrah’s first over saw Warner chop one straight onto his stumps after he failed to gauge the bounce of the delivery.
What happened next, has in fact happened a few times this World Cup. Despite the ball hitting the stumps, the bails didn’t dislodge which meant that Warner got lucky early on in his innings.
This was the fifth instance when the bails didn’t dislodge after the ball hit the stumps in this edition of the World Cup. The match against Bangladesh and England on Saturday, 8 June, saw Ben Stokes managing to hit the stumps but get saved by the bails. However, he was dismissed off the very next ball as he was clean bowled by the England all-rounder.
A similar incident took place when Chris Gayle was batting against Australia. The ball nicked the stumps on their way to the keeper, but again, didn't dislodge.
