History Has Been Created!

Five years after winning his last Wimbledon title, Roger Federer is now the Champion for a record eighth time. Marin Cilic has been beaten 6-3 6-1 6-4.

No other male player in history has won more singles titles at SW19 than this 35-year-old Swiss.

I guess it is just belief. That I can achieve such heights. I wasn’t sure if I would ever be here again in another final, after last year. I always believed I could come back and do it again. If you believe you can go really far in your life. I think I did that. I am happy I did and I am happy I am here today, winning my eighth.

This is also Federer's record 19th Grand Slam singles title.

Federer's last Wimbledon win came in 2012. He then lost to Novak Djokovic in both the 2014 and '15 finals. His first Wimbledon title came in 2003, and he won the next four after that. Cilic won the 2014 U.S. Open after beating Federer in the semifinals, his first win over the Swiss player.

Cilic Broken

I mean his serve.

Trailing 15-40 on his own serve in the seventh game of the third set, Cilic’s forehand abandons him. Ball goes right into the net and Federer has the one break he can cruise home with.

4-3 in the third set.

Anyone Say Vintage?!

Cilic served first in the set and was “leading” 3-2. But then came Federer’s serve. The ace held to love with an ace.

3-3 in the third set.

Cilic Fightback?

The Croat climbs to deuce in the fourth game of the third set.

But, this is Federer’s service.

There isn't going to be a break anytime soon. Nope. Federer closes in two points.

A Little Twitter Fun?

1-1 in the third set and Cilic is struggling to hold serve. Twitter though, ruthless as ever.

Federer Wins Second Set

Completely outplayed.

That’s the only way to describe Marin Cilic’s presence in this final. He even served his fastest ball of the tournament, but just had Federer return with ease. The Croat then hit it out and lost the point.

Federer in charge! Second set has been won 6-1.

Cilic Calls a Medic

3-0 down, broken once and Marin Cilic asks for medical help.

He did slip in the opening set pretty bad.

Federer is ready on court. The physios returns to the stands and Cilic has a towel on his head.

The crowd cheers him on with a standing ovation as he walks to his spot.

Returns to hold serve.

This is looking a bit too easy...

Federer Wins First Set

Second set point for the seven-time champion and a double fault from Cilic’s racquet ends the set in a 6-3 scoreline.

Game 7, First Set - Cilic Holds

40-0 down on Cilic’s serve, Federer fight his way to deuce. His opponent though isn't relenting easy, a serve on the far end and it has enough force to make Roger return, into the net.

First Set, Game 5 - Federer Breaks

Federer has collected three break points.

The first and second are both wasted when he returns long down the baseline.

The third gets the job done. Federer returns with a backhand across the court. Cilic underestimates it and is caught a bit short. He hits it nonetheless, but into the net.

Federer Serve in Focus

2-1 down in first set and Federer is facing his first break point at 40-30.

A solid serve at Cilic’s backhand and he nets the return. 40-40. No problem from there as Federer closes the game with ease.

Stars in the Stands

The Royals are in the house, watching tennis royalty (apologies, couldn't resist!)

Britain's Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge are in the Royal Box for this one. Also, adding to the star-quotient in the stands, actors Bradley Cooper, Eddie Redmayne and Hugh Grant. British PM Theresa May also enjoying a Sunday off.

Cilic Holds Opening Serve

Just short of four minutes into the opening game and there’s an error on the Roger backhand. Cilic holds serve.

1-0

Players Enter The Arena

Third seed Roger Federer of Switzerland and seventh seed Marin Cilic of Croatia are out on Centre Court for the men's singles final.

The good folks at Wimbledon showing a little Periscope love to the fans who haven't managed to get to their TV sets just yet. Watch the players warm-up in the live video above.

Federer Going For Number Eight

Roger Federer stands on the cusp of history, just one win from becoming the first man in the history of Wimbledon to win the title eight times. Currently he’s level with Britain's William Renshaw and his idol Pete Sampras on a joint seven Wimbledon titles and enters the final as the clear favourite, having not dropped a set in entire the tournament.

Standing in his way on Sunday though is Marin Cilic again whom he has a 6-1 win-loss record. The only time Cilic beat Federer was in the semi-finals of the 2014 U.S. Open, en route to his only major trophy.

The Swiss has won the grasscourt Slam seven times in his career while Cilic has never before accomplished the feat.

The last of Federer’s titles at SW19 came in 2012 but after a long injury lay-off in the second half of 2016, he returned to win the Australian Open this year, his 18th Grand Slam title.

Federer is 6-1 against Cilic, but the big-serving Croat beat Federer in the U.S. Open semifinals in 2014 on his way to his only major title.
