1. US Wins Men’s Medley Relay, Phelps Clinches his 23rd Olympic Gold
The United States won the men’s 4x100 metres medley relay on Saturday, giving Michael Phelps a 23rd gold medal in his final Olympic race.
Britain took the silver medal and Australia bronze.
Phelps, who swam the butterfly leg, ends the most successful Olympic career of all time with 23 golds, three silver and two bronze.
Ryan Murphy also broke the world record for the 100 backstroke in the leadoff leg for the US, clocking 51.85 seconds to eclipse the 51.94 that compatriot Aaron Peirsol swam in 2009.
2. Murray Enters Singles Final, Nadal Loses in Semis
Defending champion and men’s number two seed Andy Murray of Britain made light work of Kei Nishikori of Japan, dispatching the fourth seed 6-1 6-4 to move into the final of the tennis tournament.
Rafael Nadal lost the other semi-final to Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 4-6, 6-7. The Argentine will face the defending champion Andy Murray in the final.
3. Jamaica’s Thompson Surges to 100 Metres Title
Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson won the Olympic women’s 100 metres gold medal with a time of 10.71 seconds in the final on Saturday, beating two-time defending champion and compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
The 24-year-old Thompson finished ahead of American Tori Bowie (10.83 seconds) with Fraser-Pryce taking bronze (10.86 seconds).
The finalists finished very tightly grouped with each other running under 11 seconds apart from Jamaica’s Christina Williams.
The double defending champion Fraser-Pryce’s time was her fastest of the season.
4. Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig Wins Ladies Singles Gold
The spectators told Monica Puig they believed she could win Puerto Rico’s first Olympic gold medal in any sport, providing a soundtrack of “Si se puede!” – “Yes, we can!” – during the Rio de Janeiro Games women’s tennis final.
She could. And she did.
The unseeded and unheralded Puig capped her run of upsets with the biggest one of all Saturday, overpowering the number two seed Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to become the Olympic champion.
5. Germany Beat Portugal, Enter Semi-final
A clinical German side beat Portugal 4-0 to progress into the semi-final of the men’s Olympic football tournament. Germany will face either Nigeria or Denmark in the final.
Philipp Max, Davie Selke, Matthias Ginter and Serge Gnabry scored for Germany.
