Twitter Torn Between Hailing Kohli & Questioning Catch Controversy

A sublime century, and a controversial dismissal: King Kohli breaks the internet. So what if it’s Sunday?

Virat Kohli’s 25th Test hundred ended in controversial fashion through a contentious catch on Day 3 of the Perth Test.

Twitter, or social media in general, being besotted by Virat Kohli is a commonplace phenomenon. The rate at which the Indian captain makes cricketing records his own, and the fire with which he lights up proceedings on a cricket field, are both social media favourites.

So on a day when Kohli notched up his 25th Test hundred – becoming the fastest to the mark after Don Bradman – and was subsequently dismissed in controversial fashion, with Peter Handscomb claiming a contentious catch, it is unsurprising that Twitter exploded into life. So what if it was a Sunday?

It was contentious enough for even part-host broadcasters FOX Sports to question whether the catch taken by Handscomb was clean or not.

Through commentary on FOX, though, came a gem of a reference.

To some, it brought back memories of another highly-controversial claim during an infamous Test between the same teams a decade ago.

‘Sydneygate 2008’ remains a dark chapter in the 21st century’s fiercest rivalry – fortunately, heralded observers were quick to point out that the blame, if at all, lay more with the much-debated ‘soft signal’ rule than with Australia claiming the catch.

The catch ‘controversy’, however, didn’t eat into the plaudits coming Kohli’s way. Legends of the game – Indian and otherwise – saluted the 30-year-old for another accomplishment in an already storied career.
