UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool will take on Europa League winners Chelsea at the Vodafone Arena in picturesque Istanbul as they compete for the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, 14 August.

‘I Hope to Serve as an Example’

Usually the best games are considered to be those in which the referee has few decisions to make. A quiet game usually means that less controversial decisions were made by an official in the match.

However, with French national Stephanie Frappart set to become the first female referee to take charge of a major men’s European game, she will have added pressure to officiate without controversial calls. She will be the first official, with Manuela Nicolosi of Italy and Michelle O'Neill from Republic of Ireland as the assistant referees.

Here’s a look at how the footballing fraternity reacted to the landmark moment:

Liverpool manager - Jurgen Klopp said, “Finally - it's time. I'm happy to be a part of this historic moment.”

American ice hockey player, Meghan Duggan, congratulated Frappart on Twitter.

Liverpool centre back Virgil Van Dijk has backed Frappart saying that she has been appointed because she has the quality to perform at the highest level.

With Frappart in charge, Klopp’s team will play Frank Lampard’s Chelsea who had a rocky start to their season with a 4-0 loss in the English Premier League.
