Germany became the third defending champion in the last 16 years to lose its opening match at the World Cup. And after their shocking loss to Mexico on Sunday, 17 June, Twitterati couldn’t help but ask whether the champions will even make it to the knockouts this year.
Hirving Lozano scored the lone goal in the 35th minute, picking up Javier Hernandez's pass inside the penalty area and beating Mesut Ozil before shooting past Manuel Neuer from 10 yards.
France in 2002 and Spain in 2014 were the other defending champions to lose their opening matches, and neither of those teams advanced from the group stage!
In fact, even Italy failed to make the knockouts in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, after winning the previous edition.
Here’s a glimpse at what Twitter’s talking about after Germany’s big upset!
