Bianca Apologising to Crowd for Defeating Serena ‘Too Canadian’
Bianca became the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title after beating Williams in the US Open final.
At 19 years, Bianca Andreescu on early Sunday, 8 September morning, became the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title as she defeated Serena Williams in the US Open final.
With a 6-3, 7-5 win in New York, Andreescu denied Williams from collecting a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title.
The Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd was overwhelmingly supporting the legendary American player, not surprisingly, and spectators got so loud as she tried to put together a successful comeback that Andreescu covered her ears with her hands after one point.
"I just tried to block everything out," Andreescu said afterward. "I'm just glad with how I managed, really." She even apologised to the spectators for defeating Williams, which according to Twitter, was the ‘most Canadian answer’.
The 19-year-old Andreescu is the first woman to win the trophy at Flushing Meadows in her main-draw tournament debut in the Open era, which started in 1968 when professionals were allowed into Grand Slam tournaments. She only has participated in four majors in her brief career.
