Indian Para-Athlete Yogesh Kathunia Sets Discus Throw World Record
Kathuniya threw 45.18m, which is two metres more than the earlier world record of 42.96m set by China’s Cuiqing Li.
Indian para-athlete Yogesh Kathuniya broke the world record in the men's discus F36, while winning gold in the Para-athletics Grand Prix in Berlin.
He came up with his best throw in his third attempt.
The F36 classification that Kathuniya broke the record in includes para-athletes with coordination impairments in all four limbs, according to the International Paralympic Association. While the similar T36 class is used for track and field athletes, standing throw competitors are included under F36.
The margin of victory was also very high. Kathunia outclassed the field by almost 10 metres.
Pawel Piotrowski of Poland came second with 35.63m, while Aliaksandr Lvou finished third with 19.24m.
Appreciation poured in from Paralympics 2016 Silver medallist Deepa Malik promptly after the event ended and the result announced on its Instagram page.
