Things just got pretty embarrassing for the Indian football team.
Touted as clear favourites going into their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Guam, Sunil Chhetri’s wards were handed a 2-1 defeat by the tiny island nation of Guam on Tuesday.
But there is a reason we use the word embarrassing.
* Guam has a population of 1,65,124 compared to the 1.25 billion that India boasted of in it’s last census.
* Guam is ranked 174th in the world, that’s a whole 33 places below the 141st ranked India
Brandon McDonald and Travis Nicklaw scored the two goals for the tiny nation and even though skipper Sunil Chhetri got India on the board late in the game, the scoreline read 2-1 in favor of the underdogs at the end of the 90 minutes.
This victory infact was Guam’s second World Cup qualifying win, their first coming less than a week back when they upset Turkmenistan 1-0.
Guam now lead Group D of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers with six points from two games. The result though puts India’s chances of a third-placed finish in the 2018 World Cup qualifying in jeopardy, which in turn could affect the country’s prospect of earning a direct entry into the 2019 Asian Cup.
