In yet another nail-biting clash of the Indian Premier League (IPL), three-time champions Mumbai Indians held their nerve to become the third team to qualify for the playoffs after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in a Super Over at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Manish Pandey’s (71 unbeaten off 47) last-ball six denied Mumbai a thrilling win as his fighting knock along with Mohammed Nabi’s valuable (31 off 20) effort helped Hyderabad level the score in the stipulated 20 overs.

Then it went to the Super Over and here's how the thriller unfolded:

Sunrisers Hyderabad Scored 8 Runs

Sunrisers Hyderabad went into bat first with Manish Pandey and Mohammed Nabi padding up. They were to face MI pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

  1. Bumrah bowled the first ball to Manish Pandey a bit towards the off side. Manish, trying to put it over the boundary, struck the ball hard. However, the hunger for more runs sent him straight to the dugout as a second run proved to be a bit too ambitious for Pandey.
  2. After Pandey's departure, Martin Guptill took the strike. The second ball went for a single off Guptill's straight drive. Two runs in two balls.
  3. Bumrah's third ball was smashed for a six by Nabi, who hooked the short ball for a six at long on. Eight runs in three balls.
  4. Fourth ball. A typical Bumrah yorker hit Nabi's stumps and he walked off, having played his part. Eight in four balls ended the Sunrisers' super over.

Mumbai Indians Finish Off in Three Balls

For Mumbai Indians, Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya were facing Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan.

  1. The first ball itself put the match in Mumbai Indians' pocket, with Hardik Pandya smashing Rashid Khan for a six.
  2. Second ball was played for a single, giving Pollard the strike.
  3. The third ball wrapped up the game for Mumbai, with the hard-hitting West Indian taking a double.

Mumbai Indians now have 16 points from 13 games and become the third team to book a berth in the play-offs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad now play Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday.
