India crushed Australia at Mohali in an encounter neither team could afford to lose. The numbers didn’t matter; and net run rates were irrelevant. For both India and Australia, this was do or die.

Australia won the toss and decided to bat. They began strong, giving the Indian bowlers and fielders quite a scare.

The ball found the sweet spot on Usman Khawaja’s bat and the batsman milked it for all it was worth. Khawaja was beginning to worry the bowlers, thramming an erring Bumrah for four fours in his first over...

...Until Ashish Nehra struck, taking a crucial wicket. The dangerous-looking Khawaja was eliminated. Nehra gave India it’s much-needed breakthrough.

Australia’s batsmen began to crumble, and Yuvraj Singh sent Steve Smith packing in the first ball of his first over.

Just as Glenn Maxwell was beginning to worry the Indian bowlers and fielders, Bumrah dismissed him. Maxwell walked back to the dugout, having added 31 to Australia’s scoreboard.

The Australians weren’t about to let off so easily. Peter Nevill helped them finish flamboyantly, with a last ball six.

The Indian team was off to a steady start, with a cautious Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma at the crease.

A couple of overs in, the wickets began to fall quickly... and Dhawan, Sharma and Raina walked off the pitch in quick succession.

And then, enter the Kohli. He began comparatively cautiously, making 50 off 39 balls...

Soon enough, however, all caution was thrown to the winds and an unstoppable Kohli (82 off 51), supported by skipper MS Dhoni went on to wallop the Australians. They didn’t know what hit them.
