Flashback: When Underdogs West Germany Beat Hungary in 1954 Final
After losing to them 3-8 in the group stage, West Germany beat Hungary 3-2 in the 1954 FIFA World Cup final.
Pre-tournament favourites Hungary had gone into the 1954 FIFA World Cup final against Germany after 31 straight wins.
Just six minutes into the game, Ferenc Puskas scored the opening goal for Hungary. Zoltan Czibor then increased their lead to 2-0.
A goal by Morlock and two by Rahn, helped West Germany overcome a two goal deficit and record a 3-2 win over opponents who had defeated them 8-3 in the group stages of the same tournament.
The final is remembered as the “Miracle of Bern” and was West Germany’s maiden FIFA World Cup trophy. Since then, the unified Germany have won a total of four titles, and will be going into the 2018 edition as defending champions.
Thousands came out to welcome the new football champions when they arrived in Munich, with their unexpected victory in the World Cup earning for them a tremendous reception.
