India’s star sprinter Dutee Chand, who is embroiled in a gender case, clinched the bronze medal in the 100m event at the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar on Friday.

Chand recorded a timing of 11.52 seconds, while Kazakhstan’s Viktoriya Zyabkin and Olga Safronova took the gold and silver medals with a timing of 11.39 seconds and 11.45 seconds respectively.

Dutee had qualified for the final round of women's 100m dash after finishing second in the semi-finals (heat two) with a timing of 11.56 seconds while another Odisha athlete Amiya Kumar Mallick was disqualified after a false start in men's 100m sprint.

India bagged four gold medals on day two of the Asian Athletics Championships.

I will not say that I am disappointed. I am happy with a bronze in front of my home crowd and I will take it. I thought I would at least qualify for the World Championships but could not do it due to rain. The conditions are not good for 100m dash.

Dutee's coach N Ramesh said:

We knew that these two Kazakh athletes are better runners. There personal bests are better than that of Dutee’s, just above 11 seconds. We are happy we got a medal in front of home crowd. That is a must.
