CWG Day 1, Indians in Action: Women’s Hockey Team & Saina-Sindhu

Commonwealth Games, the multi-sports event for 71 countries and territories of the British Commonwealth held every four years, will commence from 4 April 2018 in the 21st edition of the event.

There will be 275 events across 19 sports at venues mostly on the Queensland state's coastal tourist strip, ranging from track and field and swimming to beach volleyball, which will make its debut at the games.

Indian sportspersons are set to make an impact on this year’s Commonwealth Games with 225 athletes competing across 15 disciplines.

The first day of games, a day after the opening ceremony, will see Indian sportspersons in action in various games including Badminton, Swimming, Hockey, Squash and Boxing among other sports.

The games will begin at 9:00 am AEST (4:30 am IST) on Thursday, with Women’s mixed Badminton doubles being the first game to be played by Indian athletes.

Here is the schedule for Indian atheletes’ first day at the Gold Coast games:

  • 4:30 am - Badminton (Mixed Team) - Group Stage, India vs Sri Lanka
  • 5:02 am - Hockey (Women) - Group Stage, India vs Wales
  • 7:00 am - Swimming (Men’s 50m Butterfly) - Heat 5, Sajan Prakash and Vridhawal Khade
  • 1:30 pm - Squash (Men’s Singles) -Round of 32, Saurav Ghosal vs TBD
  • 2:30 pm - Badminton (Mixed Team) - Group Stage, India vs Pakistan
  • 3:30 pm - Squash (Women's Singles) - Round of 32, Dipika Pallikal vs Charlotte Knaggs (Trinidad and Tobago)
  • 3:32 pm - Boxing (Men - 69kg) - Round of 32, Manoj Kumar vs Osita Umeh (Nigeria)
