Mumbai Indians on Thursday, 4 January, chose to retain three players – Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah – for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Mumbai Indians co-owner Akash Ambani was present at the player retention announcement event in Mumbai.

I think Mumbai Indians, much like RIL (Reliance Industries Limited), is woven like a family. We are really happy we got to retain Rohit (Sharma). Hardik (Pandya) and (Jasprit) Bumrah are pillars of the Indian team, and Mumbai Indians as well.

The franchises were eligible to secure up to 5 players by virtue of a combination of Player Retention (Pre-Player Auction) and Right to Match (RTM). According to the latest guidelines for IPL 2018, Rohit will have a salary cap of Rs 15 crore, Hardik Rs 11 crore and Bumrah Rs 7 crore.

Salary Cap Remaining: Rs 47 Cr

Since defending champions Mumbai opted to retain three players from their previous year’s squad, they now have a salary cap of Rs 47 crore remaining for the auction.

In the last edition of the IPL, Mumbai Indians became the first team in the tournament’s history to win the title a third time after they beat Rising Pune Supergiant by 1 run in the final. The win was more special for their skipper Rohit Sharma, who is the only captain to win a hat-trick of titles. Rohit has in fact now won four IPL titles (one for Deccan Chargers in 2009).

Rohit Sharma made his debut for Mumbai Indians in 2011 and has been leading the team since 2013. With 4,207 runs in 154 innings, the opening batsman has the most runs for Mumbai in the history of the IPL.
