On a day when the Indian fielders weren’t exactly at their best, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja combined to effect a stunning run-out during the third ODI between India and Australia.

On the final delivery of the 42nd over, Shaun Marsh smashed a delivery off Kuldeep Yadav to the cover, and immediately started running when Jadeja dived to the right and stopped the ball. With his lightening reflexes, Jadeja threw it back to the wicket-keeper’s end where MS Dhoni nonchalantly flicked the ball onto the stumps and appealed.

No doubt the review showed that Glenn Maxwell had been a foot away from the crease, and he walked back to the hut after scoring 47 off 31 deliveries.

Cricket expert and commentator Harsha Bhogle praised the duo’s efforts. “The Jadeja-Dhoni partnership in the Maxwell run-out was an exhibition of the highest skill in fielding. Jadeja changing the end to throw to and Dhoni nonchalantly flapping the ball onto the stumps. Could cost Australia 15-20 runs,” he wrote .

Australia were eventually restricted to 313 despite a 193-run opening stand between skipper Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja at Ranchi on Friday, 8 March.

Usman Khawaja (104, 113 balls) scored his maiden ODI ton while skipper Finch (93, 99 balls) chose this particular match to get back to form.

The Indian spinners – Ravindra Jadeja (0/64 in 10 overs) and Kedar Jadhav (0/32 in 2 overs) – were carted all around the park. Kuldeep Yadav (3/64 in 10 overs), however, redeemed himself at the back-end of the innings.

The trio gave away 160 runs in 22 overs and it was left to Jasprit Bumrah (0/53) and Mohammed Shami (1/52 in 10 overs) to maintain the discipline during the final overs as the total could have gone close to the 350-run mark.
