Indian captain Virat Kohli slammed a career-best double hundred to help India post a mammoth 601/5 (declared) before pacers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami rattled the South African top order to leave them tottering at 36/3, still 565 runs behind, on Day 2 of the second Test in Pune on Friday, 11 October.

Kohli – whose previous best was 243 against Sri Lanka – remained unbeaten on 254 from 336 balls. His marathon innings, which lasted close to eight hours, was studded with 33 fours and two sixes.

Here’s a round-up of all the big records and numbers from Day 2 of the Pune Test between India and South Africa.

  • India (601/5 declared) have posted their third total of 600-plus against South Africa in Tests – the top two being 643 for six wickets declared at Kolkata in February 2010 and 627 at Chennai in March 2008.

Virat Kohli’s Record-Breaking Double Ton

  • Virat Kohli (254 not out) posted a career-best score in Tests, bettering his 243 against Sri Lanka in the 2017-18 Delhi Test.  These two innings are the two highest scores by an Indian captain in Tests.
  • Kohli's magnificent knock is the second highest by an Indian batsman against South Africa in Tests, behind Virender Sehwag's 319 at Chennai in March 2008.  The only other double centurion for India against South Africa is Mayank Agarwal – 215 at Visakhapatnam in the first Test of the present series.
  • Kohli is the seventh captain to post an innings of 200-plus against South Africa in Tests.  The only skipper to register two such knocks remains Australia's Michael Clarke.
  • The Indian captain has taken 138 innings to register 26 Test centuries – the fourth quickest behind Don Bradman (69), Steven Smith (121) and Sachin Tendulkar (136). India's Sunil Gavaskar took 144 innings to this milestone.
  • With this double hundred, Kohli has recorded Test hundreds home and away against West Indies, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England, Australia and South Africa.  He is yet to post a century in Bangladesh.
  • Kohli, with 19 centuries in 50 Tests as captain, has equalled Australia's Ricky Ponting's tally of 19 in 77 Tests as captain.  Just one skipper has recorded more hundreds as captain than Kohli – Graeme Smith with 25 in 109 Tests.

  • Kohli, with nine innings of 150-plus as captain, has established a record in Tests, eclipsing Don Bradman's eight innings.
  • Kohli's seven innings of 200-plus as captain are a world record – the next best being West Indies’ Brian Lara (5).
  • Kohli is the only one to register double hundreds against six different teams in Tests – West Indies, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka (two) and South Africa.  Younis Khan and Kumar Sangakkara had six double hundreds against different teams (but not as captains).
  • Kohli is the fifth Indian batsman after Virender Sehwag (four), VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Karun Nair to hit a 250-plus score in a Test.
  • Kohli has reached 7,000 runs in 138 innings – the joint-fourth quickest to this landmark after Wally Hammond (131), Virender Sehwag (134) and Sachin Tendulkar (136). Garry Sobers and Kumar Sangakkara had also taken 138 innings for their respective 7,000 runs.
Kohli and Jadeja were associated in a fifth-wicket stand of 225 – India’s highest against South Africa.

Ravindra Jadeja’s 91 & Keshav Maharaj’s New Low

  • Ravindra Jadeja (91) has posted his second highest score in Tests next only to the 100 not out against West Indies at Rajkot in October 2018.
  • Jadeja's superb knock is his highest as number six batsman, eclipsing the 30 not out vs South Africa at Visakhapatnam in the first Test of the present series.
  • Jadeja's first fifty against South Africa is his twelfth in Tests.
  • Kohli and Jadeja were associated in a fifth-wicket stand of 225 – India's highest against South Africa, eclipsing the 220 between Sehwag and Tendulkar at Bloemfontein in November 2001.
  • Keshav Maharaj's figures of 50-10-196-1 are his worst in Test cricket.  However, he became the fifth South African spinner to complete 100 wickets in Tests.  He has joined Hugh Tayfield (170), Paul Adams (134), Paul Harris (103) and Nicky Boje (100).
  • Just two South African bowlers have conceded more runs than Maharaj – Nicky Boje – 65-5-221-0 against Sri Lanka at Colombo (SSC) in 2006 and Paul Harris – 53.1-6-203-3 against India at Chennai in 2008.
