West Indies opener Chris Gayle toppled Shahid Afridi to record the most number of sixes by any batsman in international cricket, in the first ODI against England on Wednesday, 20 February, reported NDTV.
Gayle now has 477 sixes to his name and has achieved this feat in his 444th match. Afridi, on the other hand, had smashed 476 sixes from 524 matches.
The West Indies batsman has now hit 276 sixes in ODIs, 103 sixes in T20Is and 98 in the longest format of the game.
India's Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are on the fifth and sixth spot with 349 and 348 international sixes respectively.
Before the start of the three-match ODI series, Gayle had announced his retirement at the end of 2019 ICC World Cup in England and Wales.
"In 50-over cricket, definitely the World Cup (is the end). I'm looking to draw the line there ... let the youngsters have some fun and I can sit back in the party stand and watch them,” the big-hitting left-hander said.
Gayle is the second most capped West Indies player with 284 matches and is also the second highest run-scorer with 9,727 runs, behind only West Indies legend Brian Lara who has 10,405 runs from 299 matches, according to India Today.
