The image of Kapil Dev receiving the 1983 Prudential World Cup on the players’ balcony at the Lord’s Cricket Ground remains firmly etched in the minds of Indian cricket fans.

That is possibly the fondest memory of Kapil Dev, perhaps the greatest all-rounder India has produced. On a day when the legendary Kapil Dev turns 60, we turn the clock back to visit some of the records set by the former India captain.

  • Best innings figures by a captain - 9 for 83, v West Indies at Ahmedabad (1983)
  • Most wickets by an Indian in a calendar year – 75 wickets in 18 Tests (1983)
  • Best match figures by an Indian captain – 10 for 135, v West Indies at Ahmedabad (1983)

All-Rounder Records

  • Only player to score 4000 runs & take 400 wickets in Test cricket – Scored 5248 runs & took 434 wickets
  • Youngest player to do the double of 1000 runs & 100 wickets – 21 years & 25 days when he accomplished the double
  • Only player in Test history to score 600 runs & take 70 wickets in a calendar year – 619 runs & 74 wickets in 17 Tests (1979)
