Swedish Police Make Second Arrest in Truck Attack Probe - Court Official

Swedish police have arrested a second person in relation to the deadly truck attack in the capital and a court has appointed the person a legal representative, a court official said on Sunday. "Police have arrested a person and we have appointed a public defender," Helga Hullmann, judge at the Stockholm District Court said.

She said lawyer Johan Akerman was the legal council appointed.

Suspect From Uzbekistan, Previously Known to Police

Swedish police are increasingly confident they have caught the man responsible for a truck attack in the capital Stockholm on Friday, but would not rule out the possibility that other people had been involved.

Swedish National Police Chief Dan Eliasson has informed that the 39-year-old arrested hails from Uzbekistan.

He has previously figured in intelligence material, Swedish security police also said on Saturday.

“The arrested man was not part of any of the security police's ongoing investigations. However, he is a person who has previously figured in our intelligence flow,” head of the Sapo security police, Anders Thornberg, told reporters.

Swedish Police Say "Device" Found in Truck Used in Attack

Swedish police said on Saturday they were examining a device found in the driver's seat of the truck used in the attack in Stockholm which killed four and injured more than a dozen.

We have found something in the truck, in the driver’s seat, a technical device that should not be there. I cannot say at this stage that this is a bomb or some sort of flammable material.

“Whether it is a classic bomb or a fire device or something else is subject to technical analysis,” he said.

Man Arrested is Truck's Suspected Driver

The man arrested on Friday in relation to the attack in the centre of Stockholm is suspected of being the driver of the truck that killed four people, police said on Saturday.

The person in question has been arrested as the culprit...in this case the driver. Then, there can be other people who are associated with him, but we do not know that at the current time.

Swedish Police Arrests and Identifies One

Swedish police said they have arrested one person in connection with a deadly truck attack in central Stockholm.

“One person has been arrested who may be connected with the incident,” police said in a statement.

Police also said that it had identified a person arrested in a Northern Stockholm suburb and who resembled the picture and description of a man that police went public with after the truck attack.

We went public with information and a picture of a person that we were interested in. The person who is arrested resembles that description which means we have particular interest in him in regard to the ongoing investigation.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said that the Nordic country was united in grief and anger and vowed that hatred would never be allowed to undermine the country's values.

Indian Embassy Officials Are Safe: Sushma Swaraj

Minsiter of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj, said that she is in touch with the Indian Embassy in Sweden. She also assured that the officials at the Indian Embassy were safe.

Swedish Police Say Searching for Person of Interest

Swedish police showed a picture of a person they said was of interest in connection with an attack where a truck drove into a crowd in central Stockholm, killing and injuring several people.

Mats Lofving, head of Swedish police’s National Operations Department (NOA) said the picture, which appeared to be CCTV footage, was taken close to the time of the incident, in the vicinity of the incident.

"I have a picture of a person who has been seen at the location at this point in time. We want to get in contact with this person," he told a news conference.

The grainy image shown by police showed a man wearing a jacket with a dark hood over a bright t-shirt and dark trousers.

Norway Police to Carry Weapons at Oslo Airport and Main Cities

Police in Norway's largest cities and at Oslo's airport will be carrying weapons until further notice following the attack in Stockholm on Friday, Norwegian police said in a tweet.

Police officers in Norway, which borders Sweden, do not usually carry guns on them.

In Finland, police increased patrols in the capital Helsinki.

Swedish Police Orders Evacuation of Stockholm Central Train Station

Swedish police has ordered the evacuation of the central train station in Stockholm after a truck on Friday drove into a crowd in a nearby pedestrian street, killing and injuring several people, news agency TT reported, citing property owner Jernhusen.

Swedish police earlier told TT three people were confirmed dead in the incident in the centre of the Swedish capital.

The Beer Truck Was Hijacked

Acording to Swedish daily Aftonbladet, Swedish beermaker Spendrups claimed its truck had been carjacked earlier on Friday. Photos showed the beer truck sticking out of the Ahlens department store.

Swedish broadcaster SVT said shots were fired at the scene, although the report hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Indian Embassy Staff Safe

The incident reportedly took place close to the Indian Embassy in Stockholm.

As per ANI sources in Stockholm all embassy local and Indian staff are reported to be safe.

Three People Killed, Reports Swedish Media

Swedish media say the truck that has crashed into a department store has killed three people.

Swedish radio also confirmed that three people have been killed in the crash and Swedish broadcaster SVT says shots have been fired. People in the area were seen to be fleeing the scene.

The Swedish news agency TT says several people have been rushed away in ambulances, and live television footage showed smoke coming out of the department store that the truck smashed into.

Body-like forms covered by blankets were seen on Drottninggatan in central Stockholm where the truck rammed the Ahlens department, a Reuters witness said.

Swedish police said say they have received calls about a person who has injured others driving a vehicle on the central Stockholm street of Drottninggatan. Police spokeswoman Towe Hagg says people have been injured but she would not confirm the deaths.
