The Islamic State killed two Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers and wounded two French Special Operational troops in northern Iraq by using a drone rigged with explosives. This 2 October attack was reported by French newspaper Le Monde.

The small drone which was shot down by the Kurdish fighters blew up after it was being transported for examination. There is still no information on the type of drone that was used or whether it was a timed explosive.

A warning had been earlier issued by the American commanders in Iraq after the Islamic State tried to launch two similar attacks using drones in September.

The troops fighting the militant group were asked to treat any small flying aircraft as a potential explosive device .

The use of drones by insurgent groups in both Syria and Iraq has now increased following their easy availability and cheap models.

Though the American troops have been provided with sophisticated weapons to defeat these drones that continue to enter restricted areas but more research is required to counter them.
