United States President Barack Obama delivered his farewell speech on Tuesday night.

He thanked the nation for supporting him during his consecutive terms as POTUS. He also encouraged those demoralised by the election of Donald Trump to be optimistic about the future of the country.

Obama's valedictory speech in his hometown of Chicago was a public meditation on the trials and triumphs, promises kept and promises broken that made up his eight years in the White House.

In his speech at Chicago's main convention center, Obama talked about how his experience in the city – at the start of his political career – taught him that change happens from the grassroots.
