A 15-year-old’s birthday party took a nightmarish turn in southern Mexico. The party became the scene of a ghastly massacre and 11 people were fatally shot. The shooting took place on Friday at a coming-of-age celebration (quinceanera) in the Mexican state of Guerrero, not far from Michoacan, where drug-related crimes, including homicides, are a regular occurrence.

According to Guerrero’s governor, Hector Astudillo, who spoke at a news conference, there was a ‘problem’ at the birthday party.

Like Michoacan, Guerrero, one of the poorest states in Mexico, has seen an explosion in drug-related abductions and homicides.

43 students disappeared in Southern Guerrero in September 2014, after being attacked by the municipal police. They were delivered to a drug cartel, which allegedly killed them.
