After US and Switzerland, India Finds Mexico’s Backing for NSG Bid
Mexico is the fourth country in Modi’s five-nation tour to support India’s NSG membership bid.
On Thursday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Mexico from the US, on the last leg of his five-nation tour. After gaining Mexico’s backing in its bid for membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), he thanked President Enrique Peña Nieto.
Besides Mexico, Switzerland, the US, and Japan have expressed support for India’s entry into the NSG.
Mexico’s support for India is seen as crucial ahead the NSG’s plenary meeting. Membership would allow India to trade in and export nuclear technology.
Mexico and Switzerland’s support is seen as important, especially in the context of China opposing India’s NSG membership, arguing that it should not be granted as India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Indian Community Greets Modi
During his rushed visit, Modi met the President and the Indian diaspora in Mexico. The two leaders issued a joint statement following bilateral talks. The two countries are looking to work jointly in the following fields:
- Agriculture research
- Bio-technology
- Waste management
- Disaster warning
- Solar energy
After a short stay, the Prime Minister left to head back to India, his five-nation tour completed.
