A controversial mural depicting US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton nearly naked, clad scantily in a bikini has been painted over by the artist who created it.

Well known Melbourne graffiti artist Lushsux was threatened with a council fine by Maribyrnong council after residents complained about the piece, which was drawn on a wall in Footscray, 5 kilometres west of Melbourne.

The council said that the mural violated their gender equity policy. The Victoria police also held that the mural was offensive and in contravention of the Graffiti Prevention Act of 2007.

Instead of removing the mural, Lushsux covered it by painting a niqab over it, leaving just the eyes showing.

No reasonable person would consider this offensive. If so, you are a sexist, racist, islamophobic, xenophobic and a bigot.

Speaking on Melbourne radio, Lushsux said that his Instagram account, which he said had approximately 110,000 followers, was deleted due to him posting a photo of the image of Hillary Clinton.

It’s hard enough to be an artist. To lose your social media following in this day and age is a big loss

Lushsux is famous for his other murals inspired from politics.

Let’s hope that the council’s strict regulations don’t interfere with artistic creativity!
