US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, 2 April wrongly claimed that his father Fred Trump was of German descent, a Washington Post report said.

In a video, where Trump is speaking to reporters on NATO, he can be heard saying, “Germany, honestly, is not paying their fair share,” Trump told reporters about NATO.

He then goes on to add: “I have great respect for Angela and great respect for the country. My father was German and born in a very wonderful place in Germany, so I have a great feeling for Germany.”

The US President was criticising Germany's contribution to NATO.

The Washington Post report says that Trump's father Fred Trump was of German descent but born in New York.

Trump's grandfather Friedrich Trump was a German immigrant and was expelled from the country in 1905, the report said.

It also said that on two earlier instances too, Trump has made similar claims - speaking on US - European relations, on both the occasions.
