At least 11 people have been gunned down in a bar in northern Brazil on Monday, 20 May, news agency AFP reported, quoting officials.

The shooting took place in the city of Belem, the public safety department of northern Para state said.

Quoting local media reports, news agency Associated Press reported that a gang of gunmen went up to a bar in Belem in northern Para state and opened fire, killing six women and five men on Sunday afternoon. State officials confirmed "a massacre" occurred but gave no details.

State communications officials stopped answering phone calls while military and civil police in Para state also did not answer phone calls or respond to emails, Associated Press reported.
