Controversial exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin has been moved to the US by an NGO, citing security reasons. Nasrin was living under protection in a south Delhi locality since 2004, before being shifted to the US by the NGO Centre For Inquiry (CFI) last Wednesday.

The author, known to have irked extremist and fundamentalist groups with her critical writing on religion and advocacy of human rights, was facing imminent threat to life in the subcontinent.

Three secular bloggers, Avijit Roy, Washiqur Rahman and Ananta Bijoy Das —all friends of Nasrin — have been hacked to death in Bangladesh since February 2015. Nasrin was believed to be the next on the hit list according to CFI.

CFI’s official press release stated that the author reached New York on May 27.

Nasrin was recently named as one of the next targets by Al-Qaeda linked extremists, prompting CFI to assist in transporting her to safety in the US, alleviating the immediate threat to her life.

The CFI has also set up a trust to invite aid and funds to support Nasreen.

The writer took to Twitter on June 1 and tweeted these from the safe confines of a tiny American Village.
