CLAIM

As Cyclone Fani made landfall in Odisha in early hours of Friday, 3 May, many claims, photos and videos regarding the same also surfaced on social media.

As a result of the cyclone large areas in Puri and other places were submerged as heavy rains battered the entire coastal belt of the state.

A video along the claim “Cyclone Fani continues to strengthen as it tracks over the Bay of Bengal....” was circulated on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.

One of the posts shared with the claim had over 3,900 shares, while the other had over 1,700 shares at the time this story was written.

The video shows a ship struggling in the sea with high waves during a storm. According to the claim, the ocean is Bay of Bengal and the high waves are caused due to Cyclone Fani.

FACT

The claim circulated is false and the video is not of a storm caused by Cyclone Fani.

On conducting a simple reverse image search, The Quint found a tweet by sever-weather.EU originally posted in March. The same video was posted in March on Facebook too.

Further research took us to a YouTube video posted originally in the year 2016. The video might be even older than 2016.

Since the video dates before 3 May, the incident definitely did not occur after Cyclone Fani made landfall.

This claim was earlier debunked by AltNews.
