CLAIM

A video of a man brutally thrashing a girl has been circulating on social media with the claim — “a Malayali girl eloped with a Bengali guy and that is her situation now.”

In the video, the girl can be seen being pulled by her hair, dragged on the floor and beaten up.

WHAT IS THE TRUTH?

The video is from Assam's Nagaon district, and in it, a man is beating up his daughter for refusing to get into prostitution. The video does not show the predicament of a Malayali girl who had eloped with a Bengali man.

WHAT WE FOUND

We broke down the video into key frames using video verification platform InVid and did a reverse Google search, through which we found a report on Somoy News.

A further dive into the story, using the key words 'chamguri area Assam father beating daughter', we came across an Aaj Tak report which said that the father was trying to push his daughter into prostitution. When the 15-year-old protested, the father thrashed her mercilessly, the article said.

The father, identified as Jamaluddin, is a resident of Mowamari village under Samaguri police station in central Assam’s Nagaon district.

According to reports, Jamaluddin, a hawker by profession, allegedly had links with the flesh trade racketeers.

Jamaluddin had also attempted to force three of his ex-wives into prostitution, after which they filed for divorce.
