Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

  • The viral clip shows a woman being attacked in Dhanmondi, Bangladesh in February, amid demonstrations against the destruction of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s home.

  • The clip is unrelated to Malhotra.

What we found: At first, we ran a keyword search to find if Malhotra had been attacked after any court hearing, however, we did not find any credible reports to prove the claim.

  • We, then, divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.

  • It led us to an X post containing the same video dated 11 May, prior to YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's arrest on 16 May, as reported by The Hindu. It claimed that the video originated from Bangladesh.

  • We found various Bangladeshi media reports showcasing the same visuals.

  • As per a report by Kalbela News, the event took place on 6 February in Dhanmondi, Bangladesh.

  • A woman was reportedly attacked for resisting the destruction of ‘Dhanmondi 32’, the official home of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. A mob angered by her protest allegedly branded her as an Awami League agent

  • As per a report by Bangladeshi news outlet Prothom Alo from 6 February, after the fall of the Awami League government, angry crowds attacked, vandalised, and set fire to a house at Dhanmondi 32 since August 2024. Since then, the house has been largely abandoned.

  • The Hindu reported in February that the residence was set ablaze during a live speech by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who condemned the act as unjust and symbolic.

  • The attack followed Hasina's call for resistance against the new regime, installed by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement after toppling her sixteen-year rule.

Conclusion: A video from Bangladesh of an incident in February has falsely gone viral as one showing arrested YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra being attacked in public.
