Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

  • The video dates back to early March from West Bengal's Alipurduar when two labourers from Bihar allegedly disguised themselves as Muslims. Local police confirmed the same to The Quint.

What we found: We divided the viral video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.

  • We came across some posts on Facebook featuring the same video, however, they were uploaded in March.

  • The video's description noted that two Hindu migrant labourers from Bihar dressed as Muslims in Alipurduar in West Bengal in March.

  • Some other posts from March on Facebook made the same claim. You can see those here and here.

  • This hinted that the video was not recent or related to the violence because of the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad.

We, then, reached out to the Assistant Superintendent of Police in Alipurduar who confirmed that this video was from March. He also noted that two Hindu Bihari labourers disguised themselves as Muslims in order to earn something via begging during the holy month of Ramadan.

Conclusion: This video is old and not related to the ongoing violence against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad.
