CLAIM

As heavy rains continue to batter Bihar, a video of a crocodile in a flooded street is viral on social media with the claim “Crocodile In Patna during Heavy rain”. Some social media users have also claimed that it is from Rajendra Nagar in Patna.

The video shared by Facebook page of ‘Shiksha Point’ received an engagement of over 18,000 views and was shared by over 600 users at the time of publishing this article.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim along with the video is false. The video is not from Bihar’s Patna, but Gujarat’s Vadodara and dates back to August.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

We searched on YouTube using keywords ‘crocodile heavy rain’ and found a video that was uploaded on 10 August with the caption ‘Crocodile in the city due to continuing rain, heavy rain cause wild animal to get in the city’. The description of the video suggests that it is from Gujarat.

Consequently we did a YouTube search using keywords ‘Gujarat crocodile heavy rain’ and found a NDTV bulletin uploaded on 3 August with the caption ‘Chilling Crocodile Rescue From Flooded Street In Gujarat’.

According to NDTV, the video is from Gujarat’s Vadodara which had received a rainfall of 500 millimeters in 24 hours. As a result of overflowing rivers, crocodiles were out on streets that created a situation of panic among the residents.

The NDTV bulletin also shows a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) adopting measures to rescue a crocodile. In the bulletin, it can be seen how a man is covering crocodile’s face with a towel, following which he sits on the crocodile to gives an indication to others to do the same.
