A video of newly elected Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ravinder Singh Negi from Delhi's Patparganj seat has gone viral on social media platforms.

  • In the clip, Negi is seen asking shopkeepers to display their names in front of their shops, else, they could be seized.

  • Those sharing have claimed that the MLA warned business owners to put their identity in front of the shops after winning in the Delhi polls, which happened on 8 February.

An archive of the post can be found here.

(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is misleading. This video is not recent and dates back to December 2024 which is before the Delhi elections in February.

What we found: At first, we divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image on some of them.

  • We found the same video on Jist News' Instagram page. It was uploaded on 8 December 2024.

  • The caption noted Negi's designation as "councillor" and not MLA.

  • Similarly, The Quint reported on this incident extensively on 18 December 2024 as well.

  • Negi told The Quint in December that he did these exercises as a part of the "Jan Jagrukta Abhiyan." He added that he undertook the checking on the basis of the complaints received in the area and not any government order.

  • Around the time this video went viral on social media, Negi's name was not announced as a candidate for the Delhi elections.

  • We also found reports from October 2024 by the Times of India and Indian Express about Negi being under the hammer for allegedly asking Muslim shop owners to display their names.

  • The newly-elected MLA has posted similar videos on his official YouTube page as well. Team WebQoof found a video from August 2024 as well.

Conclusion: An old video from December 2024 of Negi has gone viral with the false claim that the incident took place following his win in the Delhi polls.
