CLAIM

A video of two cops swinging lathis (sticks) fiercely at each other is being shared on Facebook with the claim that the two fought over the distribution of ‘bribe money’.

The text in Hindi reads, “चालान काटने के बाद हिसाब का सही बंटवारा ना होने पर रुझान आया.” It loosely translates to, “These two cops were not able to settle their money matter.”

This video, has garnered over 63,000 shares and is being shared by multiple users on Facebook. It shows the two hitting each other no-holds barred with lathis on their heads.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The video is from Lucknow and is as old as 2013. It has been re-shared with a false narrative. In reality, these two cops fought after one of them objected to the other being absent from his designated duty point during then UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s visit.

WHAT DID WE FIND OUT

On searching with keywords ‘cops beating each other lathis’ we came across a news report published by Hindustan Times in 2013.

According to the daily, the two cops, identified as Mukund Chandra Yadav and Sunil Dixit, were on then Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s duty at an entrepreneurs’ conference held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow. The two fought after Dixit objected to Yadav’s absence from his point of duty.

According to another report by Headlines Today, the two cops were suspended and an enquiry was launched into the matter.

The two cops could be seen bleeding profusely yet aiming at each other.
