CLAIM
A viral video shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding a little girl at a podium, where she leans into the mic to say, "Chowkidaar hi chor hai".
The video has been shared with the following message on social media: "प्रथम पंक्ती में बैठे एक बच्चे ने मोदी जी को हाथ हिलाया तो मोदी जी ने उसे प्यार से उपर बुलाया और प्यार से पूछा कुछ बोलोगे ? बच्चा बोला हाँ.....आगे आप खुद देखो.......😜"
(Translated: Sitting in the first row, this child waved at PM Modi. Modi ji asked her to come on stage and ask her if she would like to say something. The child said yes, see what happens next..”)
The video has been shared widely on Facebook with this narrative.
TRUE OR FALSE
The claim made in the video is false. The little girl seen in the video did not really say "Chowkidaar hi chor hai", the audio has been super-laid to make it appear so.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
A reverse image search of the key frame with both Modi and the child led to the original video put up by the Bharatiya Janata Party on their YouTube channel.
The title of the video reads, "A specially-abled girl reads extract from Ramayana on PM Modi's birthday in Navsari."
Uploaded on 18 September 2016, the 1-minute-16-second video shows the girl read extracts from the Ramayan after the PM coaxes her to do so.
The audio in the first few seconds of this video has been tampered with to make it appear as though the child said, "Chowkidaar hi chor hai", while in the PM's arms.
